On February 12th and 13th, the folks at Lucky Envelope Brewing will celebrate Chinese New Year. As in previous years, you are invited to join in the fun. Perhaps more than years gone by, we have reason to celebrate the welcoming of a new year, the Year of the Metal Ox.
Details about the event and the beer release below.
Year of the Metal Ox
In retrospect, we will all remember the Year of the Metal Rat as fraught with unforeseen challenges. I recently read somewhere that according to the Chinese horoscope, the Year of the Metal Ox (2021) is synonymous with hard work, discipline, loyalty, and a fair appreciation of tangible reality. Tangible reality sound pretty good right now.
“Year of the Metal Rat did not go as expected,” said an announcement from Lucky Envelope Brewing “But that doesn’t mean we can’t approach the Year of the Metal Ox with the same confidence and diligence that 2021’s Chinese Zodiac embodies. Look forward to four exciting Lunar New Year beer releases that can be enjoyed at [our] Tasting Room or at [your] home.”
Lucky Envelope Brewing, located in Seattle’s Ballard Brewery District, is recognized for its creative, inspired beers. Not just delicious beers of expected styles, but also more whimsical creations. Another thing that separates this brewery from the crowd, it is owned by Chinese-Americans, which is not exactly common in the craft beer industry.
Event Details and Beer Details
The highlight of this event is the release of the tea-infused Metal Ox Juicy IPA, a recipe conceived by Lucky Envelope’s Barry Chan and brewers from Highland Brewing of North Carolina. This is the second beer the two breweries have created together. Read about the first. Highland Brewing is also owned by Chinese-Americans.

BEER RELEASE DESCRIPTIONS:
Beer: Mijiaya Historic Chinese Beer 5.6%
Availability: Limited draft, 16oz crowler fills available ($8, Limit 1 per customer)
Description: Named after the 5,000 year-old Mijiaya archaeological site in Shaanxi, Northern China. We brewed this special Chinese New Year release based on the starch and grains found in various brewing vessels excavated from the dig site. Brewed with barley, Job’s tears, millet, Chinese squash, lily flowers, and yam, the resulting beer is flowery, light, and clean.
Beer: Li Hing Mui Pineapple Sour 5.7% ABV
Availability: Limited draft, growler fills and 16oz crowler fills available ($7)
Description: Originating in China and extremely popular in Hawaii, Li Hing Mui is dried salted plums that can be ground and used to flavor candies, dried fruit, and other sweet treats. Pickled and processed for trade travel, the literal translation for Li Hing Mui is “traveling plum” or “walking plum”. This sour-salty plum powder adds a flavorful pucker to our light sour base brewed with pineapple puree. Inspired by its popular use of topping flavored Hawaiian shaved ice, this beer is a refreshing and tangy tropical treat that harnesses that aloha feel.
Beer: Metal Ox Juicy IPA 6.5% ABV
Availability: Draft, growler fills and 4-pack cans ($17)
Description: Lucky Envelope Brewing in collaboration with Highland Brewing wish you a Happy Year of the Metal Ox! Our celebratory Chinese Zodiac IPA is brewed with Seattle’s own MarketSpice Lychee Rose Black Tea and double dry-hopped with Citra, Simcoe Cryo, and Loral hops.
