Mark the date! Beer lovers around Seattle are in for a treat when The Pine Box celebrates its 10th anniversary on Saturday, March 26th. For the past decade The Pine Box has served a carefully curated selection of beers in a 100-year-old building that previously served the community as a mortuary. Maybe beer, cider and liquor aren’t the only spirits you’ll encounter at The Pine Box.
To begin with, to mark the 10th anniversary, they’ll release two very special beers. One is a sour beer created for the occasion by the folks at New Belgium Brewing. The other beer is something resurrected by a brewery closer to home — Fremont Brewing. One can only imagine what else The Pine Box will come up with for the celebration. This one is sure to attract the area’s most-decerning beer aficionados.
First up, The Tenth Nail. Lauren Woods Salazar is the chief curator at New Belgium — the wood cellar director who supervises the blending of the beers. Lauren (a friend of The Pine Box) and her crew at New Belgium got together and came up with something memorable for the upcoming anniversary. The Tenth Nail was inspired by one of The Pine Box’s favorite house cocktails — that’s another thing The Pine Box does very well, cocktails.
Second, The Pine Box worked with Fremont Brewing to create a new version of The First Nail. ‘The nail’ is the anniversary beer that Fremont Brewing first created for The Pine Box a decade ago. Upon releasing The First Nail, the brewery liked the beer so much that they didn’t let it get away. Fremont continues to produce it to this day. It’s a burly, 11.5% ABV oatmeal stout that the brewery uses as the base for its award-winning Rusty Nail. (First Nail, Rusty Nail, see what they did there?)
You’ll find both beers on draft and in bottles when The Pine Box opens on the day of the anniversary party.
Exact plans for the 10th-anniversary soiree are still coming together. Knowing what I know about The Pine Box, and recognizing how much local and not-so-local brewers respect The Pine Box, I think it is safe to say that the draft lineup will impress us all.
I will update this post and resocialize it when I learn more details about the event on March 26th. For now, chisel that date in stone.
